Barolo is the most noble wine from Italy. Barolo 2001 by Gianni Gagliardo is one of the world's great Barolo wines. Barolo 2001 comes from the blending of tiny lots from small single vineyards that are scattered around the Langhe of Barolo. The primary sources for the Gagliardo Barolo 2001 are single vineyards from the La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo and Serralunga communes. Each vineyard is harvested and fermented separately then blended in the winter and aged for 2 years in French Tonneau wood and another 6 months in bottle. The result is a powerful Barolo with an aging life of 15 to 25 years. Garnet red with an intense aroma of cherries, dried roses, violets, blackberry, licorice and saddle leather. Spiced apples and cinnamon abound, with a touch of mint and rose petals. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a fruity black pepper finish. Deep, black fruits are sweet and long; plenty of punch on the very long velvet finish. This Barolor is Vibrant!SAVE EVEN MORE! This winemaking family goes back six generations in the area. The grapes grown on each single vineyard are all vinified separately, by hand and with small, high-quality yields. At Present the Gagliardo estate is composed of 30 hectares. This land is distributed in the zones of La Morra, Barolo, Serralunga and Monticello d' Alba.

RATINGS: The word is finally out. Gianni Gagliardo vineyards are finally getting the recognition that they deserve. While the Barolo 2001 was not known when first released, the other vintages are finally being reviewed and rated by the critics. Here's their comments about this wine, and in other vintages.
2001 BAROLO - Wine of the Year - DECANTER 2008
WINE SPECTATOR - 2001 BAROLO: "This is very raisiny, with coffee and tobacco aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and slightly rustic but with good fruit and a silky palate."
What the WINE SPECTATOR says:
Barolo 2003: "Shows very jammy, plummy character. Full-bodied and round, with chewy tannins and a long finish..."
92 points WINE SPECTATOR -
Barolo 2004: "Crushed blackberry, ripe strawberry and raspberry follow through to a full body, with fine yet chewy tannins and a long, focused and fruity finish. A well-crafted red. One of the best wines from this producer in a long time. Best after 2012."
